29 More Inexpensive Date Ideas

Previously I challenged you to commit to dating your spouse more. I hope you took me up on that challenge (high fives for you if you did).

If you’re joining the game late or looking for more fun date ideas that won’t empty the wallet, here are 29 (it is a leap year, remember?) for February.

  1. Make a couple’s vision board. Dream up goals for this year or next. Your board can have goals for your home renovation ideas or for growing a family. The possibilities are endless.
  2. Go to the dollar store with $1. See if you can each pick out an item that makes you think of the other one.
  3. Think up new names for your friends. You can do this based on their talents, quirks or habits. Be nice though.
  4. Take one of the free courses at your local hardware or craft stores. Search the store webpage and you may find a calendar of courses.
  5. Make a meal of Costco samples. Become food critics by creating a ratings card and judging the samples.
  6. Make friendship bracelets. No one says you have to wear them in public. But, it’d sure be cute. If he wants to hide it, make it an anklet he can hide under his sock.
  7. Watch old home movies. You’ll share a laugh or cry or at least a big, reminiscent smile.
  8. Read a story to your mate. It doesn’t have to be a long one, but there’s something really soothing about closing your eyes and listening to your mate read aloud to you.
  9. Go to the library or bookstore and leave nice notes in the books. Who knows when they’ll be found or who will find them.
  10. Stargaze and try to find the constellations. Use a book about astronomy or – since it’s 2020 – find a website that tells you where to look and what to look for.
  11. Brainstorm ways to break the Guinness world records. Or make up a new type of record. Funny or crazy. You may be able to get yourself in the books!
  12. Do something creative. Paint matching coffee mugs or decorate wine glasses with glass pens/markers. Oil based markers are best for this – not just normal sharpies.
  13. Have a Goodwill costume contest. Give each other a very small budget (like $10-$15) and see who can put together the best themed costume or outfit.
  14. Paint & hide rocks. This has gotten popular and there are even Facebook pages you can follow to see where you rock is found and where it pops up next.
  15. Volunteer together. Serving those less fortunate side by side will make you appreciate each other that much more.
  16. Have a movie marathon. Pick a trilogy or movie genre and make a night of it. Pop popcorn and cuddle on the couch.
  17. Give each other massages. You may not be a professional masseuse, but there’s something tender and romantic about your spouse touching you.
  18. Get lost on purpose. Drive somewhere you’ve never been and try to figure your way back home. Take your GPS in case you really do get lost.
  19. Play a people watching game. Have a list of things you must spot or make Bingo cards beforehand.
  20. Play truth or dare. Yes, I know you’re not twelve anymore. But who cares? Have fun with it.
  21. Go play with animals at the animal shelter. These sweet fur babies will appreciate the love and attention and the workers will most likely welcome the volunteer help.
  22. Take online relationship tests. I recommend the Five Love Languages quiz.
  23. Go take photos. Visit a park or car show or your own backyard and see who can take the most unique or intriguing photo.
  24. Go to the gym together. Not a typical date, but follow it up with a shower together afterward and I bet it’ll become a night to remember.
  25. Watch planes take off and land at the airport. Make up stories about where they are going or coming from.  Visit the airport website and try to figure it out.
  26. Participate in a trivia night. You may surprise each other with your random knowledge.
  27. Play old school video games. Grab the old Nintendo or Atari and laugh at our simple the graphics used to be.
  28. Snuggle around the campfire. There’s something romantic about snuggling in a blanket together, roasting marshmallows, and watching the flames burn (in more than one way).
  29. Watch your wedding video. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve seen it. It’s a day to remember and you’ll love reliving it over and over again.

I hope these ideas have your creative juices flowing. If nothing else, I hope you see that you can turn just about anything into a great date when you’re with your mate. No one say dating when you’re married had to be boring or traditional.

Have you ever done any of these activities on a date night? What would you add to the list?
