Bringing Surprise to Love

February is the month of love, lovers and showing love.  So, who else but the Dr. of Love, Leo Buscaglia, should remind us of the value of keeping love fresh and new. The following message is from the book Born for Love: Reflections on Loving by Leo Buscaglia. Be sure to watch the video on showing our love now.

Bringing Surprise to Love by Leo Buscaglia

surprises in love

“Even the most ardent lovers tend to be placated and lulled by love.

Comfortable without a ripple of discontent, we take our relationships for granted, and a great complacency descends. This can be a precarious time for love.

Symptoms of the developing problem can include a dull acceptance of everything, the desire to remain safe by traveling only familiar paths, and an indefinable feeling that something is missing. The cure involves a willingness to step a little more boldly into paths that excite and astound and renew.

Nothing is so fatal as predictability.

Dull routines have a way of insidiously creeping into our lives: Sunday morning breakfast after church at the same restaurant; Wednesdays with the in-laws; Fridays at the movies. This thread of habit is woven into our lives until we find ourselves bound, limited only to experiencing the same small slices of life over and over again.

What is so desperately needed in such situation is a serendipitous act, a surprise dinner, an unexpected gift, a little craziness to shake up this deadly habitual existence.

Love withers with predictability; its very essence is surprise and amazement. To make love a prisoner of the mundane is to take away its passion and love it forever.”

What I appreciate about this message from Leo Buscaglia is that is warns of what can happen when we let our relationships become stale or we get bored.

So this Valentine’s Day I encourage you to keep traditions that you have, but to also find new ways to show your love and affection for your mate. Show them your love in unexpected ways and at unexpected times. And more importantly let this become a new habit.

In the short video clip below, Buscaglia reminds us the time to show our love is NOW.

With love,
